25 things I've learned in 25 years

August 23, 2017

I'm 25 today. 25! I don't even know how to express what that feels like! When I was a kid, 25 always sounded incredibly mature to me. As if it ment you had your shit together and totally knew what life is all about. As if! Today I know that turning 25 is not a whole lot different from turning 15. I've grown up since turning 15, of course. I have a lot more responsibility for myself now. I earn my own money, pay my rent, buy my own groceries, do my taxes, bother with all those fun adult things that 15-year-olds don't usually have to worry about. I've learned a lot over these past 25 years but there's a lot more to learn still. I still feel young. And I still don't have my life together. I'm still trying to figure out who I am and I still don't know where my path will take me. It's all a work in progress. But I guess that's okay. I've only just turned 25 this morning, after all. Maybe I'll be a lot wiser tomorrow. (Probably not.) Either way, here's 25 things I've learned in 25 years:

1 You're the most important person in your own life. Focus on yourself, your health and your happiness before focusing on others.
2 Do what you love. Because it makes you happy. As obvious as it sounds.
3 Money can't buy happiness. Having money does make life easier but that doesn't mean it makes life happier as well.
4 Travel as much as you can. There's so many places to explore and so many things to learn about the world.
5 The things that happen to you happen for a reason. Even if it may not seem like that at first.
6 Know your limitations but try to push your boundaries. Achiving something you never thought you could feels incredible.
7 Don't compare yourself to others. Just don't. It doesn't make you feel better about yourself.
8 Perfection doesn't exist. There's no need to try and be perfect because what does being perfect mean any way?
9 Know your accomplishments. And be proud of what you've achieved so far.
10 Only you can make your dreams come true. Don't rely on others. Make the things you want happen yourself.
11 Focus on the positive things in life. Life won't always be all smiles and sunshine but above the clouds, the sun is always shining.
12 Everbody has their own opinion. And that's perfectly fine. Don't let somebody else's opinion control you.
13 It's okay to say no. It really is, so stop worrying about what others might think and just say the damn word.
14 You don't owe anybody an explanation. Just be yourself, unapologetically.
15 Spend time alone. Take a long walk by yourself, take yourself out to dinner, enjoy your own company.
16 Listen to your body. Take good care of it and use it to its full potential but stop when it tells you to stop.
17 Working out is great. It is hard and sweaty, yes, but it will make you feel good and that's all that counts.
18 Don't take things for granted. Be thankful for what you have because that might not be around forever.
19 Not everyone is going to like you. And you're not going to like everyone. And that's okay.
20 It's okay to cry. Even if it causes an insane headache. Crying doesn't mean you're weak, it means you're alive.
21 Always bring a water bottle. You will need it, so just do it, okay?
22 Cook and bake more. Trying new recipes and experimenting with ingredients is fun. Plus, you're creating something delicious.
23 Owning less stuff makes life easier. A cluttered home equals a cluttered mind. Therefore, less clutter means more focus.
24 Change is not a bad thing. It means new opportunities, new chances.
25 Be open-minded. And curious. Learn new things, meet new people. It'll help you expand your horizon.
